About Underground Utility Location Services

Students engage in a structured sequence of coursework that introduces foundational and advanced concepts in underground infrastructure systems, utility mapping, geospatial technologies, electromagnetic and radio-frequency locating techniques, soil analysis, blueprint and site plan interpretation, and communication protocols used in the damage prevention industry. Through lab-based instruction, hands-on field exercises, and simulated jobsite scenarios, learners practice locating underground lines—including gas, water, sewer, electric, telecommunications, and fiber optic systems—using industry-standard equipment and technologies.

The pathway may include opportunities to earn industry-recognized credentials, such as OSHA 10, First Aid/CPR, or certifications offered through national utility locating organizations, enhancing employability within the infrastructure and utility services sector. Work-based learning experiences, including jobsite observations, industry mentorships, or partnerships with local utility companies and locating service providers, offer students authentic exposure to the responsibilities, tools, and expectations of professional locators.

This pathway prepares students for entry-level roles such as utility locator, damage prevention technician, field mapping assistant, or infrastructure support specialist. They are also positioned to pursue further training or careers in utilities, construction management, surveying, GIS technology, telecommunications, or public works.
